Enlightened Self-Interest for Mom on Father’s Day

With Father’s Day approaching quickly I know many of you are still on the hunt for the perfect Father’s Day gift. Well, I think Michelle has the right idea, why not get something for your spouse that you can enjoy, too?! Michelle Pino has contributed this piece based on the knowledge she has learned while working as spa manager at Skana, one of New York’s finest spas. When Michelle isn’t working you will find her baking, crafting, reading a magazine or catching up on her favorite TV shows. When gift-giving occasions arise, my family knows that I like to consider giving gifts with a little enlightened self-interest in mind. Oh, I’m always careful to give a gift the recipient will enjoy, but I like to get a little out of the gift myself as well. We all laugh about it sometimes, but everyone generally admires the way I give gifts that others love and from which I can benefit. Father’s Day is a great opportunity for moms to implement some enlightened self-interest into their gift giving. Here are a few ideas.

If you’ve been spending too much time in the kitchen lately, maybe it’s time to get Dad a grill and let him show off his man skills. If you have plenty of room and live in an area where the weather generally cooperates with outdoor plans, you can find a traditional model he’ll love. If space is limited or the weather in your part of the world tends to be harsh, consider one of the many indoor grills available on the market. In no time you’ll be hosting barbecues with the neighbors and family.

Get your husband a resort pass for two. He’ll be sure to bring you along, and the two of you can enjoy individual activities during the day before joining for a romantic dinner later. Let him rake in the winnings at the poker tables while you enjoy a spa treatment, or encourage him to enjoy a round of golf while you relax with a cocktail poolside. More than ever resorts are catering to couples specific interests while still providing a joint package. While the weather is getting warmer now is the perfect time for a weekend getaway.

If you and your husband enjoy wine, consider a wine-of-the-month club as a Father’s Day gift. Since it’s in poor taste to drink alone, chances are you’ll get to enjoy this one just as much as he will. A fun idea can be to cook a special meal once a month to go with the wine. This way you get to enjoy a new wine monthly and have something to look forward to.

Wouldn’t you love to have a little quiet time to yourself? Get Dad a gift card for some exciting place where he can take the kids for the day or an afternoon. Some of my family favorites include miniature golf, go-carts, the skating rink or a water park. While dad and the kids have a fun day out mommy can get a relaxing day in. No matter how busy you get it is always important to make time for yourself and this can be it.

Sure, you could give your husband one of those annoying computer or video games to play. Why not get him a gift that the two of you can enjoy together instead? That way, you can both be happy.
